Support Knit

Support Knit, and take it Anywhere.

Knit is free, with no ads and no tracking, and it's Jeff Mixon's full-time job. Supporters help pay the bills and keep Knit's servers running. Support Knit with $3 a month, or $30 once for a year, and Knit thanks you with Knit Anywhere.

After you support Knit

Add it to Knit with one link.

  1. Claim it

On GitHub, sign in on the claim page. On Ko-fi, open the link in the email that follows your tip.

    Go to the claim page
  2. Open the link on your phone

The claim page shows a link and a QR code once. Open it on the phone that has Knit.

  3. Knit does the rest

Knit keeps a random ticket key from the link and trades it each day for a ticket, so there's no sign-up and no password.

What supporters receive

What Anywhere adds to Knit.

Knit already connects phones that are close together, with no internet and no sign-up. Knit Anywhere carries the rest over the internet.

Larger photos and files

Share the moment with the people who missed it.

Knit already passes photos between phones nearby, and sends small ones over the internet. With Knit Anywhere, larger photos and files also reach people across town or across the world, within a daily upload allowance.

  • Your phone seals each one before it leaves, and only the phones in the chat can open it.
  • The people you send to don't need Knit Anywhere to receive it.
How a photo reaches someone far away
  • Your phone seals the photo
  • Knit's relay carries it over the internet
  • Their phone opens it

Calls

Calls that connect more often, and stay private.

Knit connects a call directly when the two phones can reach each other. On mobile data and on office, hotel and campus Wi-Fi they often can't, and with Knit Anywhere the call goes through Knit's own call relay and still connects.

  • Usually it's enough that one of you has Knit Anywhere.
  • Knit encrypts every call end to end. The relay carries it and can't listen in.
  • Turn on Relay all calls in Knit's settings, and the people you call see the relay's network address instead of yours. The relay sees both.
  • Direct, when the two phones can reach each other
  • On mobile data and office Wi-Fi, they often can't
  • Knit's call relay connects the call instead, and it stays end-to-end encrypted

Supporter badge

A badge that says you support Knit.

Turn on the supporter badge and a small mark appears on your profile picture for the people you chat with. Each phone checks it offline, so a copied badge shows for nobody.

  • It stays off until you turn it on.

Who builds Knit

One engineer, from the app to the servers it reaches.

Jeff Mixon is a senior software engineer who builds distributed systems, full-stack products, and machine learning infrastructure. His work spans the stack, from TypeScript services and mobile applications down to Linux kernel drivers and software-defined radio.

Knit Anywhere runs on servers Jeff sets up and looks after: the relays that carry calls, photos and files between phones that aren't nearby. Relaying calls and storing larger files costs real money for every person who uses them, so Knit offers them to its supporters as a thank-you.

Jeff designs, builds, and maintains Knit himself. Knit is his full-time job, and its supporters help pay his bills and keep Knit's servers running.

Supporting Knit

What supporters ask.

Supporting Knit, in the terms

What does my support cover?

Knit is Jeff Mixon's full-time job. Supporters help pay the bills and keep Knit's servers running. Knit has no ads and no tracking, so supporters are how it keeps going.

Why is Knit Anywhere only for supporters?

Relaying calls and storing larger files costs real money for every person who uses them, so Knit offers them as a thank-you to the people whose support covers that cost.

Which kinds of support come with Knit Anywhere?

On GitHub, every monthly tier from $3 and every one-time tier from $30. On Ko-fi, a membership from $3 a month or a one-time tip of $30 or more, in US dollars.

How long does it last?

Monthly support keeps Knit Anywhere on for as long as it continues. One-time support comes with a year, counted from the day you claim it rather than the day you give.

How do I stop?

Cancel on GitHub or Ko-fi, wherever you support Knit. Knit Anywhere keeps working until the end of the month your last monthly support covered.

Can I get a refund?

Write to support@getknit.app. If you're a consumer in the EU, the EEA or the UK, you can withdraw within 14 days and pay only for the days you had it.

Does it work on more than one phone?

Each supporter has Knit Anywhere on one phone at a time, and can move it to a new phone. The people you talk to don't need to be supporters to receive your photos and files.

What if I lose the link or change phones?

Come back to the claim page. Supporters on GitHub sign in again, and supporters on Ko-fi enter the email address they tip with. The new link replaces the old one, so Knit Anywhere stops on the phone that had it.

What if I tipped on Ko-fi in another currency?

Only tips in US dollars are matched on their own. Write to support@getknit.app and we'll set yours up by hand.

Do I need to sign up?

No sign-up with us. Supporters on GitHub sign in with GitHub once, to claim; supporters on Ko-fi use the emailed link. After that, Knit trades a random ticket key for a daily ticket.

What the ticket issuer keeps
